East 17 — Stay Another Day

“Stay Another Day” is an East 17 single released on 21 November 1994 and featured on the album Steam. Written by Tony Mortimer, Dominic Hawken and Rob Kean, it became the UK Christmas Number 1 of 1994.

A ballad rooted in personal loss

The song grew from personal bereavement rather than a story about Christmas celebrations. Its central feeling is the wish for more time with someone who is gone. London Records’ account of the release also places that sense of loss at the heart of the song.

The arrangement puts the melody and voices at the centre, making a contrast with East 17’s more dance-oriented early singles. That contrast is part of what makes it worth hearing alongside “House of Love” and “Deep”, rather than in isolation.
