East 17 — House of Love

“House of Love” is East 17’s debut single, released in 1992. The recording also appears on Walthamstow, the group’s first album. It reached Number 10 on the UK Official Singles Chart.

The single that introduced East 17

Before the ballad “Stay Another Day”, “House of Love” offered a different introduction to the group: dance rhythm, a direct melodic hook and the mixture of pop and rap associated with their early recordings.

For a first listen, the debut offers a starting point before exploring the more reflective side of the catalogue. It introduces a group whose singles would take several different musical directions.

House of Love and Walthamstow

The song belongs to the debut-album chapter of East 17’s story. Walthamstow takes its name from the group’s home area in East London, while East 17 refers to the local E17 postcode.

Hearing “House of Love” alongside “Deep” gives a useful introduction to that early period. For the timeline from the band’s formation to their first album success, read the biography.
