East 17 — Steam: The Single and the Album

“Steam” is a 1994 East 17 single and the title track of the group’s second album. The single reached Number 7 on the UK Official Singles Chart. The album Steam reached Number 3 on the UK Official Albums Chart: these are two different chart achievements.

Steam: the single

The song represents the more rhythm-led side of the Steam era. It offers a useful contrast with “Stay Another Day”, another recording from the same album.

“Steam” entered the UK Official Singles Chart in the chart dated 1 October 1994. Its Number 7 peak belongs to the single, not to the album. View the Official Charts history for the song.

Steam: the album

Steam followed Walthamstow as East 17’s second studio album. Released in 1994, it includes “Steam”, “Stay Another Day”, “Around the World”, “Let It Rain” and “Hold My Body Tight”.

The album brings these songs together as one release, but each single has its own release history. Its UK album peak was Number 3, as recorded in the Official Charts album history.

Where Stay Another Day fits

“Stay Another Day” is a track on Steam, not an alternative title for the album. Its UK Christmas Number 1 achievement refers to the song’s single release.

How to identify the release

When reading credits, looking for a recording or following a link, check whether “Steam” refers to the song or the album. A single edit, an album track and a later edition may also carry different timings or release dates.
