East 17 Biography

East 17 formed in Walthamstow, East London, in 1991. The original group brought together Tony Mortimer, Brian Harvey, John Hendy and Terry Coldwell. Their early recordings combined melodic pop with dance and rap, establishing the musical character of the band.

1991: the beginnings in East London

The group took its name from Walthamstow’s E17 postcode. That local connection also shaped the title of their debut album, Walthamstow. For an overview of the name, members and sound, visit About East 17.

1992–1993: the first singles and Walthamstow

“House of Love” introduced East 17 to the UK singles chart in 1992. “Deep” followed into the UK chart in January 1993 and reached Number 5.

Walthamstow entered the UK Official Albums Chart at Number 1 in the chart dated 27 February 1993. “It’s Alright”, another song associated with the debut album, went on to reach Number 3 in the UK singles chart. These releases are useful starting points for hearing the group’s early blend of melody and rhythm.

1994: Steam and Stay Another Day

The second album, Steam, brought another chapter of releases. The title single reached Number 7 in the UK, while “Stay Another Day” became the group’s first UK Number 1 single.

Released in November 1994, “Stay Another Day” held the top position for five weeks and was that year’s UK Christmas Number 1. Its ballad arrangement offered a different perspective on a group already known for dance-oriented singles.

The next chapter

Up All Night followed in 1995 and reached the UK album Top 10. In 1996, East 17’s collaboration with Gabrielle, “If You Ever”, reached Number 2 in the UK singles chart.

E-17 and later recordings

Resurrection appeared in 1998 under the name E-17. The later catalogue also includes Dark Light, released in 2012. These releases extend the story beyond the group’s first run of singles.

The band’s later history includes changes of line-up. The four founding members named above describe the original group, not a guarantee of the musicians appearing at a future event. For a proposed performance, the booking team can confirm the relevant line-up and format.
